Workshop Information

Thanks for your interest in the summer writing class; I would love to have your son or daughter as a part of it.

A Little Background on me:

I graduated in English Education with a minor in Spanish from Brigham Young University in 2001; I graduated last May with my Masters of Education from Cal State Fullerton. I have a Utah and a California teaching credential in English, and have seven years of experience teaching high school honors English. I also taught yearbook and newspaper; I feel very familiar with the writing arena and I enjoy it tremendously. I am taking a small hiatus from the classroom to be home with my two most important students: my children. I started feeling their youth was like sand spilling from my fingers and I just didn’t want to lose any moment of it. I do, however, miss the classroom and the bonds I made with my students, and seeing the progress they made as young scholars and people. I will return to it someday, but until then I look forward to the summer writing program each year to give me my “dose” of teaching. This will be my fifth summer teaching the writing class. I have had great success with the program, and the students involved found it to be a very helpful component to their application process.

What the Classes Involve:

It is a four week course that focuses on writing college application essays. In fact by the time the class is done your student will have his essays written, proofread, and ready for submission long before the deadline. (All his essays will be finished by the end of the summer. What a relief!) The course discusses ideas, organization, sentence structure, word choice, and voice - all traits needed for good writing and also are imperative qualities for a crisp, inventive college essay. So not only will he get polished college essays out of the workshop, but he will also learn valuable tools for his future high school/college writing. Each session contains the following: a mini-lesson on the week’s writing focus, time to discuss concerns, problems, prompts, and break-out time to read essays and receive feedback.

When and Where is the Class Offered?

The class will be taught this year in Ladera Ranch at a studio home. (Directions will be provided once the student is enrolled.)

I am offering two, four-week sessions: a summer session and an early fall session.

Summer Session Dates:

August 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th

Fall Session Dates:

September 13th, 20th, 27th, and Oct 4th

We meet every Monday for four weeks. There are three sections to choose from: a 5:00pm, a 6:15pm, and a 7:30pm. Students choose one time and only come once a week. There are usually 12-15 students in each hour.

I am teaming up this year with an outstanding college counselor. Her name is Coleen Bryan and she has been helping students prepare successfully for college for eight years. She is an outstanding person and is super saavy in terms of college applications. Every time we talk I am more and more impressed with her. Her information can be found at http://www.collegematerials.com/. I am going to do all the essay work and she is going to be available to cover the application intricacies. Each Monday she too will be offering classes during the 5:00pm time slot (If your student chooses that time frame for the workshop then the weeks he works with Coleen he can attend the writing workshop with me during another hour.). Coleen’s classes include: The College Application Process: Finding Your Niche and Creating a Successful Application, Creating a Resume and Having an Interview that Defines the Individual, The Common Application, and The UC/Cal State Application. The fee for Coleen’s breakouts is $75.00/class.

During the four-week class time frame students have unlimited email access with me. They can send me drafts at anytime and receive feedback from me to help enhance each essay. I make myself very available to them during this time.

What’s All This Cost?

Four Week Workshops: $425.00

Coleen Bryan’s Breakouts: $75.00/class

Private Essay Help With Me: $95.00/hour

Talk the class and all the options over with your son or daughter and see what you all think. I am already registering students for the summer and anticipate it to fill quickly. Let me know if you have any more questions.

I look forward to hearing from you soon, Kamee
